DISCOVERY II is a 40' Intrepid center console based on the Miami River, serving as a versatile nearshore research platform for a wide range of marine science projects throughout South Florida. Powered by twin 425 hp outboard engines, the vessel provides fast transit times to maximize time in the field and can support multidisciplinary research within approximately 12 nautical miles of shore. The vessel has successfully supported projects including shark tagging, marine mammal surveys and dolphin biopsy sampling, fish tagging, drone-based aerial surveys (e.g., manta rays), scientific diving operations, ROV and AUV deployment and recovery, coral reef monitoring, fisheries research, environmental sampling, and marine debris assessments. A large tuna door provides safe and efficient water access for divers, researchers, and equipment deployment. DISCOVERY II is well suited for researchers seeking a flexible platform that can be adapted to a variety of marine science objectives. While primarily operating from the Miami/Biscayne Bay area, the vessel can be relocated for multi-day projects anywhere from Jupiter to Key West.
